Saturday 21st September – optional programme

10:00 Visit of the Stade Vélédrome
The cycle stadium is a mythical place for many inhabitants of Marseille but also for football supporters around the world. The stadium’s extension and renovation must therefore meet the expectations of the people of Marseille. With well-thought out lighting, the new changes contribute to giving this emblematic building located in the centre of the city its rightful place.

11:00 Visit of the “Cité Radieuse”
Le Corbusier: tour of the apartment block known as Cité Radieuse (radiant city) With its avant-garde sculptural design and concepts, “Cité Radieuse” combines all the components of a mini-city, built around the concept of the “family”.

The tour includes a visit to an original duplex apartment, infrastructures, shops, the bar/restaurant and superstructures. A plastic art exhibition is also open to the public at MAMO, an art centre created on the roof of the building.

Corbusier’s style still makes itself felt in this building with its interplay of light and powerful concrete sculptures which define original spaces. Over 60 years after its construction, this building still interests and appeals to architects and town-planners.

13:00 Excursion and lunch to the Calanque de Sormiou
Wild and magnificent, these magical places are steep-walled inlets where light interplays with water to create transparency and reflection.
Traditional food, relaxation and even swimming are on the programme for an enjoyable and sociable experience in true Marseille style, not to be missed.

17:00 Visit of the MuCEM
Inaugurated this year as part of Marseille-Provence 2013, the MuCEM is a new national museum at the entrance of the Old Port of Marseille. It focuses primarily on the cultures of the Mediterranean, from a comparative and multi-disciplinary perspective, in which Europe and other continents that border the Med will play a major role.

Much more than a museum, the MuCEM is a cultural centre that brings together all disciplines of the social sciences and presents artistic expression from the Mediterranean’s two shores.

More importantly, it is a new way of seeing the Mediterranean as a place of openness and sharing, reflecting on a common history, understanding the dialogue of civilisations, explaining the challenges involved, applying these to contemporary phenomena, and shaping a new public space.
