Delightful daylight in Jyväskylä

An installation called “Pallerot” (meaning “Dots”) has been installed for the summer 2022 in Jyväskylä (FI). This idea emerged, says Elisa Hillgen, Lighting coordinator at City of Jyväskylä, “as part of the city’s vision to be The City of Light during the whole year, not just during dark times with artificial lighting”. The aim is to use summertime and daylight to come up with projects for people to enjoy.

The location is in the Huhtakeskus old mall in the neighbourhood of Huhtasuo, one of Jyväskylä’s socially disadvantaged districts. The mall plays a crucial role as a meeting place, offering shops for groceries, restaurants, a library and even a youth centre. The Pallerot installation is on the main square of the mall where there is usually an open sky. This new colorful roof and its daylight effect has been created to give a sense of intimacy to the space.

The installation was done in co-operation with national neighborhood programme that wants to develop and build more appeal for Huhtasuo. As a direct social gathering action, people were joining in to attach the colorful bright dots during a special event. Beams were painted by the people from the youth centre.
