EDITORIAL – Annual Report 2022 by Meri Lumela, LUCI President, Deputy Chair of the City Board of Jyväskylä.
2022 was a very special year for LUCI!
Because 20 years is really something to be proud of, all along the year, we took every opportunity to be together, in person and online. After the COVID years, we especially need to meet, experience and build strong collaborations.
2022 was not only about celebrating achievements: we also wanted this year to be focused on sparking and exploring “the Future of Urban Lighting”, to think and move ahead.
In this context, the exchanges and contributions gave us the opportunity to build a collective vision: the LUCI “Declaration on the Future of Urban Lighting”, a key document that highlights our values, our concerns, opens up avenues for the future, and will be a guide for cities in the coming years.
The launch of the LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards, a major new endeavor for our network, was another important highlight of this year.
Today, urban lighting is recognized as a key urban policy by many, in many parts of the world, probably more than the first founding cities would have dared to imagine. There is still a lot of work to do, and in the next 10, 20 and even 50 years we will keep building LUCI! Many thanks to all that have contributed to our great network over the years and to this special anniversary in particular!
This year has also unfortunately seen a number of crises affect world peace and energy supplies that deeply impact our lives and urban lighting. In order to nurture an optimistic vision of where cities are going, we need to work together and imagine, collaborate and co-create.
The LUCI network is needed more than ever!
