Silo 468 – written by the winds

A disused oil silo has been converted into a mesmerising light art piece and public space with the aid of swarm intelligence, interactive lighting and coding. The natural light, wind and the movement of light on the water formed the principles of the lighting design concept. Walls are perforated with 2012 holes in reference to Helsinki’s year as the World Design Capital. The lighting signifies the start of a major urban redevelopment for the City of Helsinki. It aims to draw attention to the unknown district and create a landmark and marketing device for the city.
