This new project is expected to greatly improve the energy efficiency of the public lighting system of Varna, while reducing carbon emissions and maintenance costs for the City. A smart monitoring system will help manage the new LED street lighting, and the city is also building autonomous photovoltaic systems for some of its neighbourhoods.

According to Antoniya Dimitrova, energy efficiency expert for the Municipality of Varna, additional benefits are expected: “This will improve the quality of life for citizens and increase the attractiveness of the city. And as municipal employees, we are looking forward to developing a strong expertise in the field of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and energy management.”

With more than 400,000 inhabitants, the City of Varna is the third-largest city in Bulgaria. The city has been a major economic, social and cultural centre for almost three millennia. Located on the Black Sea coast, it is well known as a tourist centre and as one of the greenest cities in the country.
Varna has been a member of LUCI since 2005.

About EEA-funded projects: “Cooperation with a partner from one of the donor countries – Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – is mandatory for the implementation of EEA-funded projects. The financial mechanism is targeted at countries whose gross national product per capita is below 90% of the EU average. The priorities of the Mechanism coincide with those of the EU for a green, competitive and inclusive Europe” (TheMayor.eu).
