Social Indicators

The list below suggests some indicators that may help event organisers to identify some key questions, which they may ask as part of a survey, or a face-to-face interview, with a sample of people in a given area, and ask people both before and after the light event.

People feel civically-engaged/ involved in their community

  • Feels well-informed about local affairs
  • Feels they can influence decisions that affect the area
  • Feels that people in their neighbourhood can influence decisions that affect the neighbourhood

Not civically engaged

  • Has not been involved in a local organisation
  • Does not feel well-informed
  • Does not feel they or others can influence decisions that affect the neighbourhood

Perceptions of local area

  • Facilities
  • Problems
  • Enjoy living ‘here’
  • Feelings of safety walking at night
  • Victim of crime in the last 12 months?

  • Would you say this is an area you enjoy living in?

Feeling safe walking around after dark

  • How safe do you feel walking around after dark? (very safe / fairly safe / not safe)
  • Has the person been a victim of crime in the last twelve months? (yes / no)
