Burgos lights its heritage

Burgos, which has a rich historical heritage with three UNESCO Heritage monuments, and which is also on the Santiago de Compostela route, aims to use lighting as part of its city marketing strategy to boost tourism.

At the PLUS Deep Dive, held on the 8th and 9th of February 2012, city urban planners presented the new lighting plans for the Cathedral surroundings which incorporate the first LEDs in the historical city centre. The area is now lit using aluminium rectangular columns with LED directional spotlights that vary in height depending on the lighting requirements.

The city also presented the illumination plans, designed by Anton Amann from Architectural Lighting Solutions, for its UNESCO certified Cathedral, a lighting initiative that aims at encouraging tourists to spend the night. Besides using LEDs to save energy, Burgos, a signatory of the Covenant of Mayors, Agenda Local 21, and a new member of the “Smart Cities” network, will also be implementing a tele-management system (GPRS) in its new boulevard.
