GENERAL PRESENTATION

Medellin (2,4 million inhabitants) is a city located 1450 meters above sea level, with an average of 23°C during the whole the year.

Located in the “Aburrá Valley”, surrounded by mountains exceeding 2500 meters above sea level, the city has been growing in a continuous adaptation with this topography and also obeying some social displacement phenomenon from the country side to the city.

The river has been a natural division in the city, nowadays projected as a significant integrator elements in the city.

 

PUBLIC LIGHTING MANAGEMENT

The municipality is responsible for

  • street lighting
  • decorative and architectural lighting
  • lighting for sports facilities
  • festive lighting

The City delegates the public lighting management, including the maintenance, to the company EPM (Empresas Públicas de Medellín). EPM follows the city administration’s guidelines (manifest) for the planning and execution of the corrective and programmed maintenance activities. Regarding corrective tasks, the company guarantees that 84% of the requirements are attended in less of 24 hours, and 100% of them will be cleared up in no more than 15 days.

The preventive maintenance is defined on an annual basisaccording to the systems necessities and the requirements of the city administration.

 

LIGHTING STRATEGY

Lighting master plan

A strategic plan for lighting  is currently under development in accordance with Medellínn urban plan (POT – Plan de ordenamiento territorial)

Plaza Mayor
Uva Moscú y Uva Versalles – two loccal communities identified as “Articulated Life Units” (UVA) in the framework of the urban planning and social development strategies of the City.

Perspectives for the future

  • Reduction of energy consumption through equipment and low energy lighting
  • Enhancement of the quality of lighting through master plan guidelines
  • Improvement of maintenance with telemetry control.
