Mons en Lumières is the first light festival in Wallonia (Belgium).

Every year in January and February, during 8 evenings, the city center of Mons will be gloriously illuminated with art and light, thanks to a fascinating route designed to host multiple carefully crafted installations and light projections. These will seamlessly blend into the urban setting and the architecture of the historic center. Furthermore, every year a guest artist linked to the theme will be hounoured and will punctuate the route with her/his works.

Accessible to all and completely free, the course will highlight local, national, and international talents. Through a call, artists from all backgrounds, lighting designers, architects and designers from any country can apply with a light artwork.

Mons en Lumières cares about people with specific needs. It’s vital for us that an event of this scale should be completely accessible to everyone. To achieve this, the team has been working with experts to design the route, train the teams and volunteers and adapt the signage. This support will continue with each new edition to ensure that the Festival remains as accessible as possible.

Sustainability is also an essential aspect of the event. An audit was carried out with the help of experts to determine the objectives to be achieved in the short, medium and long term. During the first edition, that welcomed 145 000 spectators in the city, some objectives have already been achieved. For example, we want to encourage people to come by public transport that is why the route will always begin and finish at the station. But we know that there is still a long way to go if we want to reduce the footprint of this type of project as much as possible. That’s why the teams will be supported by these experts every year.

Dates of the previous/upcoming edition: January 30 – February 09 2025
