The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival is one of the most renowned light festivals in Korea. It originates from the lantern lighting custom used during the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle of the Imjinwaeran War (Japanese invasion, 1592) as a military strategy to prevent Japanese troops from wading the Namgang River. Every year, during the festival, thousands of floating lanterns illuminate the Namgang River. These lanterns are made out of silk and are recyclable.
