Since 2012, Amsterdam Light Festival illuminates the iconic canals of Amsterdam. Every winter, unique light artworks – of which a majority is created especially for the festival – illuminate residents and visitors of the city. After the festival is over, the artworks and artists are given a second chance, travelling all over the world. It’s our mission to connect and enrich people through light art, worldwide, year-round.
The upcoming edition will be about what legacy we leave behind for future generations. From shining cultural monuments to our impact on natural phenomena and even everyday household objects, Edition 14 explores the things we pass on. We’ve asked artist to consider questions like ‘What are we leaving behind?’, ‘What will remain of us?’ and ‘What do we choose to carry forward?’.
The artworks can be explored by land or by water, via various cruise, bike and walking experiences. The festival is realised through extensive collaboration with the City of Amsterdam, local businesses, cruise companies, cultural partners, residents, volunteers and a variety of other stakeholders.
Dates of the previous/upcoming edition: 27 November 2025 – 18 January 2026
