LUCI Coffee Break – March 2024

In order to engage with members, offer new learning experiences and maintain online the much loved “LUCI Family” atmosphere of our in person events, the LUCI Coffee Bre@ks were created. These short 30-minute regular online rendezvous sessions are an opportunity for members to stay in touch and hear from experts on a variety of urban lighting topics. Members then have access to replays on the LUCI Hub, our dedicated knowledge exchange platform.

The next LUCI Coffee Bre@k takes place on:

Thursday, 14th March 2024 at 10:00 a.m. CET

Topic: Transformation of public lighting in Flanders, a new approach.

Driven by climate objectives and less light pollution, the public lighting in Flanders is in full transformation. Fluvius, the Flemish distribution grid operator is installing 130.000 LED luminaires a year and already managing 350.000 smart luminaires for the 300 Flemish municipalities.

Together they are looking to exploit at full the possibilities of these new technologies and use the new information regarding impact of Public Lighting on man and nature. So that they enable the municipalities to make or renew their policies and find again the right balance. Where is public lighting required and at what level? New light schemes are introduced still guaranteeing safety but with less energy consumption and less light pollution. The case study of the municipality Willebroek shows already the benefits for citizens and nature.

The scale of the Flemish operations and new approach challenges Fluvius, the manufacturers, the contractors and the 300 municipalities with many new questions.

Speaker: Walter Geerts, Product Manager Public Lighting at Fluvius

Since 2018, Walter Geerts is Product Manager Public Lighting at Fluvius, the Flemish distribution grid operator for gas, electricity, public lighting and other activities. He is responsible for this service to 300 municipalities. After working at an engineering company and as a researcher at the university of Brussels, Walter started his career in the energy sector 25 years ago at the marketing department of Electrabel (forerunner of Engie) before joining Eandis and now Fluvius as a project manager and product manager.
