LUCI Coffee Break – June 2024

In order to engage with members, offer new learning experiences and maintain online the much loved “LUCI Family” atmosphere of our in person events, the LUCI Coffee Bre@ks were created. These short 30-minute regular online rendezvous sessions are an opportunity for members to stay in touch and hear from experts on a variety of urban lighting topics. Members then have access to replays on the LUCI Hub, our dedicated knowledge exchange platform.

The next LUCI Coffee Bre@k takes place on:

Thursday, 20th June 2024 at 10:00 a.m. CEST

Topic: Shaping Düsseldorf’s way towards a Smart City through Smart Public Lighting.

The City of Düsseldorf strives to become climate neutral by 2035 and to continue developing into a smart city. It has implemented a lighting project with the aim to achieve demand-based lighting control in order to improve the quality of life and the quality of stay within the city while significantly reducing energy consumption and the CO2 footprint of the lighting. The City, working with Signify and Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, the municipal utility company, upgraded 3.000 public light points into a connected lighting solution, allowing it to monitor and operate each one individually, giving the city greater control over lighting use.

A pilot project was developed to address a unique and specific challenge in Düsseldorf: how to reduce traffic due to congestions caused by cars seeking parking spots through the clever combination of innovative technologies, all mounted to the so called smart city ready lighting pole, an in-house development of Stadtwerke Düsseldorf. During this Coffee Bre@k, we will hear more about how an upgrade of these lighting points allowed the city to test out smart lighting solutions to the ubiquitous parking traffic issue and how urban lighting can become part of a smart city strategy in general.

Speaker: Florian Fuchs, Smart City Expert at Stadtwerke Düsseldorf AG
