The festival celebrates Northern culture and talent through the presentation of lightwork by local, national and international artists. SPECTRA animates several key locations including Union Terrace Gardens, the atmospheric Kirk of St Nicholas as well as iconic Marischal College.

In 2018, a music programme has been added to the festival.

The SPECTRA Catalyst Conference brings together cultural leaders, artists and experts, from across Europe and within the UK, to present their strategy, successes and aspirations around cultural development, with a focus on Aberdeen.

Th 2022 edition showcased Scottish and international artists’ works as part of Scotland’s “Year of Stories” that celebrate stories inspired by, written or created in Scotland.

The 2023 edition (9-12 February) took place across three neighbourhoods across Aberdeen.
