Across the world, cities are growing, Amsterdam included. Over the next few decades, how will the city continue to develop? What sort of important themes will emerge? What are the consequences on the uses of public space? What will be the role of lighting?

  • Lightvision City of Amsterdam – facts & figures by Hans Akkerman & Paco Bunnik

What is the meaning of light in the city? What are the hallmarks of Amsterdam? Paco will take us on a journey looking at the relationship between urban planning and lighting, and the ambition to allow lighting design in Amsterdam to play a more integral part in the urban planning process. Amsterdam also has a new vision when it comes to light. Hans will explain the core thought behind this: that all forms of light contribute to the experience of public space and architectural quality.

The non-profit Night Mayor foundation was established in 2014 to professionalise the function of Night Mayor. Mirik Milan was elected as the Night Mayor of Amsterdam, the first position of its kind worldwide. What is the meaning of his function and what is his vision for the economic and cultural role of nightlife in our cities?

Guided walk to discover the light art in the Hortus and Tugela underpasses, the illumination of the Skinny Bridge and Amsterdam’s special “Kroonlantaarn” lamps around the Hermitage Museum.

    Lighting is benefiting from the technological revolution we are currently experiencing. What possibilities do technological innovations offer to lighting design?

Session 1: Adaptive Public Space and Interactive Lighting

How can light interact with the uses and users of public spaces? Thanks to efficient analysis of user data, public spaces can be better adapted to their general purpose or to specific functions on special occasions. In small groups, you will co-design and gain new insights into how light can be adapted to the users of public spaces. This is an active and creative prototyping session.

Session 2: Innovations in the Port of Amsterdam

  • Stefan Bakker

The Port of Amsterdam, the fourth largest in Europe, hosts interesting and innovative lighting pilot projects and is searching for ways to use its areas as a laboratory  for even more innovation and environmentally friendly uses of the public space.

Session3: Innovatins in Stadiums and Area Development

  • Sander van Stiphout & Kees Klein Hesselink

What are the trends influencing sports stadiums? And how can innovative lighting be a catalyst for truly smart stadium area development? From the user’s perspective to the supplier’s perspective: how do these views influence each other?

Session 4: Innovation in Maintainance and Assets

  • Jean-Paul Rocour & Anne Weeda

Cities are responsible for the good management and maintenance of street lighting and illumination. Asset management is a relatively new procedure. What is it exactly? What advantages does it offer? Does it help further innovation?
