Dark side of light – reducing light pollution for an eco-friendly society

 

The negative effects of lighting on the environment, human health and society have been increasingly gaining attention, and various measures to reduce unwanted light have been suggested. This presentation ponders on the concept of light pollution, presents key results from national-level survey charting public perceptions of light pollution, and seeks avenues for eco-friendly solutions.

 

Jari Lyytimäki, Senior Researcher, Finnish Environment Institute

Dr. Jari Lyytimäki is a senior researcher at the Environmental Policy Centre, Finnish Environment Institute and Adjunct Professor at the University of Helsinki. His research areas include environmental communication and management of emerging environmental issues such as light pollution. He has co-authored an award-winning Finnish-language book on light pollution (2013, University of Helsinki Press).
