Reykjanesbær is a coastal municipality on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula (Suðurnes) in the country’s south-west. It is commonly understood as the connected urban area of Keflavík and Njarðvík, and also includes Hafnir, a community shaped for centuries by the North Atlantic, fisheries, and seafaring culture.
Today, Reykjanesbær is one of Iceland’s fastest-growing municipalities and a key gateway region for international visitors, closely connected to the country’s main international airport and the surrounding UNESCO Global Geopark landscape.
Reykjanesbær sits in close proximity to one of Europe’s most dynamic volcanic areas.

As a new LUCI city member, Reykjanesbær is eager to both contribute and learn sharing experience from a coastal, high-weather-exposure environment close to active volcanic systems, and drawing on LUCI expertise in lighting master planning, quality of light, sustainability, and placemaking.

Reykjanesbær’s lighting work is guided by practical Nordic needs, safety, accessibility, and comfort during long winter nights, while protecting the local night environment and strengthening place identity. The municipality prioritises:
- Climate-resilient street furniture and infrastructure, designed for sea spray, wind, freeze–thaw cycles, and heavy weather exposure.
- Quality of light with low glare and reduced spill, supporting active travel and neighbourhood wellbeing.
- A strong cultural dimension, including the annual Ljósanótt (Night of Lights) festival in Reykjanesbær.
