Leipzig is a cosmopolitan and international city. As an important trade fair location and a traditional university city, Leipzig has always been a city of trade, science, encounters and creativity.
Leipzig’s main characteristics are visible in the areas of culture, commerce and science, as well as quality of life and recreation. The most evident hallmark of the city is its cultural wealth. Leipzig is the hometown of Johann Sebastian Bach and the world famous St. Thomas Boys Choir.

Urban lighting in Leipzig
Since the early 1990s the City of Leipzig has been working continuously on lighting concepts, lighting strategies and finalized a lighting masterplan in 2019.
The lighting systems, maintenance and operation are entirely in municipal hands.
Each year on the 9th of October, the Leipzig Festival of Lights remembers the demonstrations of 1989 with light art in public space along the former demonstration route and at original locations.
