Our interest in joining LUCI arose from learning about its principles and values, realising that they are in line with our own as a city. We are now part of its network of cities that promotes the sustainable use of light for social, cultural, and economic development. As a government authority, we are interested in challenges such as energy efficiency, light pollution, and the social and economic quality of life of our population.

Urban lighting in Guadalajara

Currently, Guadalajara has 105,000 luminaires throughout the city, all of which use LED technology. There is also a pedestrian lighting program called Safe Trail, which ensures comprehensive lighting of public spaces.

In its public, iconic, and high-traffic areas, there is dynamic lighting with colour changing architecture. There are currently 44 sites under this program. It’s also important to mention its smart lighting system: remote management in the city centre allows for greater control over lighting, energy consumption, network failure response, and scheduling for events and festivals.

As a key environmental achievement, Guadalajara is committed to sustainability. Currently, 60% of the energy used in public lighting comes from wind power, helping avoid producing approximately 9,200 tons of CO₂ annually. Thanks to the significant efforts and work carried out in public lighting, Guadalajara has reached a lighting efficiency rate of 98.6%, and a citizen service effectiveness rate of 96% in responding to public reports.

  • Number of lighting points: Around 105 000 (100% LED)
