Geographically, the city lies in central Nepal, on the bank of the Narayani River which is renowned for its historical, social, economic, cultural, and religious perspectives. It is the headquarters as well as the commercial center of Chitwan district.
Bharatpur was established in 1979 and was declared a Municipality in 1991 and Sub-metropolitan in December 2014. Finally, it was upgraded to Metropolitan City on March 10, 2017.
Bharatpur city covers an area of 433 km2 and has a population of more than 300,000 people.
