LUCI takes part in CIE 2025 Midterm Meeting in Vienna
More than 430 participants from 40 countries gathered in Vienna from 4 to 11 July for the CIE 2025 Midterm Meeting and Scientific Conference, a major international event dedicated to the science and technology of light and lighting.
Organised by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) with the support of the City of Vienna, this landmark event featured technical sessions, workshops, and discussions spanning all six of the CIE’s scientific divisions. Key themes included the role of light in human health and circadian rhythms, the challenges of light pollution, advances in digitalisation and metrology, and the impact of artificial intelligence on lighting design and control.
“Lighting today is at the intersection of science, technology, art and culture, its impact on humans and nature is enormous”, said Mark Burton-Page, Director General of LUCI. “Events such as the CIE Midterm Meeting are vital to share research, grow the international academic cooperation and innovation, and reflect on the social and environmental role of artificial light in our lives.”
LUCI was proud to take part in this important event and engaged in many meaningful conversations with the scientific world. The EU-funded “Art of Darkness” project, which explores how darkness – as a counterpoint to light – contributes to heritage and cultural identity of cities was briefly introduced.
A highlight of the week was the celebration of 100 years of permanent illumination at Vienna’s City Hall, marked by the unveiling of a renewed façade lighting scheme, winner of the German Lighting Design Award 2024. The spectacular light show welcomed the global lighting community to one of Vienna’s most iconic landmarks.
A heartfelt thank you to the CIE – International Commission on Illumination and all who made this inspiring week possible!
