Amsterdam Light Festival
Amsterdam Light Festival is a festival of light and water, offering you a fabulous winter experience in the heart of Amsterdam. Scores of boats, bridges and buildings are decorated with thousands of lights, transforming the Dutch capital into a truly magical place. The fairytale atmosphere is created every evening from 7 December.
Festive start
The lights along the Amsterdam canals have been entrancing the residents of and visitors to the Dutch capital since the seventeenth century. This year’s Amsterdam Light Festival will illuminate the city in spectacular style. Throughout the festival, the buildings, bridges and sluice gates along the Amstel will be lit up in a special way. The light artists will also be let loose on the inner city of Amsterdam. Look out for the big switch on during the festive opening of Amsterdam Light Festival on 7 December.
Boulevard of Light
The heart of Amsterdam Light Festival will be the Amstel river, with buildings such as the Amsterdam Music Theatre, Carré theatre and Hermitage museum being lit up in a unique
way. The bridges too will get the light treatment, including the ancient wooden ‘skinny bridge’ (Magere Brug) and the Amstelsluis locks. Along the quays will be various works by artists, including projections, interactive illuminations and special objects related to light. Together they will form a sensational Boulevard of Light.
