2022 LUCI Coffee Bre@ks

In order to keep engaging with LUCI members, offering high-quality learning experiences and maintaining the atmosphere of the much loved “LUCI Family”, we created the LUCI Coffee Bre@ks. These short 30-minute regular online rendezvous sessions are an opportunity for members to stay in touch and hear from experts on a variety of urban lighting topics.

March 2022 Coffee Bre@k

“The effects of reduced public lighting on crime and fear of crime: a literature review” – Prof. Elisabeth Enhus (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)

In the March Coffee Bre@k, Professor em. Elisabeth Enhus addressed an underlying question to current urban lighting strategies, as cities strive to find the right amount of lighting.

The questions included: What are the effects of reduced street lighting on crime and fear of crime? and How can we try to find the balance between more light (demands linked to real and perceived safety/security) and less light (to respond to climate and economic challenges)?

As we assessed the complexity of this issue, this literature review will be essential to raise the right questions and look at the available scientific literature

“Adaptive Lighting with strong energy saving potential in Rome” – Paolo Di Lecce (General Director, Revetec Srl,)

In the April Coffee Bre@k, Paolo Di Lecce introduced the DIADEME project that won the EU Sustainable Energy Awards 2021 in the Innovation category. Funded by the LIFE European program, DIADEME developed an experimental approach to adaptive street lighting that has mainly been applied in the city of Rome. The Italian capital has supported the creation of an IoT (Internet of Things) structure with close to 800 adaptive lighting points, which meets the needs of a capital city with a variety of street uses and weather conditions, all the while bringing strong energy saving potentials.
