The Lyon Light Festival, which will take place from the 8th to the 11th of December this year, was born on the evening of the 8th of December 1852, when the people of Lyon illuminated their windows and balconies with candles and went down into the street to celebrate the installation of the statue of the Virgin Mary on the Fourvière hill.

For the 2011 edition, 70 light installations will transform Lyon for the roughly 3 million visitors that are expected to visit the city over the four days of the festival.
