The City of Helsinki is organising the “Lights over Kruunuvuorenranta” design competition for the artistic lighting of the new Kruunuvuorenranta residential area.
A new seaside district, Kruunuvuorenranta, will be built in Helsinki on the site of a former oil port over the next 15 years. The district has exceptional visibility. Viewed from the city centre, it is situated on the other side of an open expanse of sea.
The purpose of the competition is to create a visually, ecologically and technically high-grade lighting plan that will make Kruunuvuorenranta a work of light art visible from the city centre over the sea.
The competition is organised as an international invitational competition, with the entrants selected via an open registration procedure. Registrations will be accepted from 14 December 2011 to 24 January 2012.
Four teams will be selected as the competition entrants by the City Planning Board on the basis of a proposal by the competition jury. The competition entrants will be announced on the competition website in February.

The competition is part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme, which aims to promote the city’s development through design. The competition will start on 26 March 2012 and end on 1 August 2012, and the results will be announced in October/November 2012 as a World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 event.
