The City of Helsinki announces a competition for the creation of a lighting master plan for its Kruunuvuorenranta district.

An international competition to select the general lighting plan for Helsinki’s Kruunuvuorenranta district, a new residential area that comprises one of the city’s most visible marine frontages, will be launched later this year.

The competition will focus on the design of the western shore as seen from a distance - the district’s western façade will be built into a work of light art that can be seen both from the city centre and the sea.

Artistic lighting will be utilised to create a comfortable neighbourhood and aesthetic experiences of space. The intention is to use innovative and ecological lighting methods to make Kruunuvuorenranta a district with a coherent lighting design that is both nationally and internationally unique.

Based on the references specified in the notification procedure (to be released later this year), 4 design teams will be selected to participate in the competition. The jury will consist of representatives of City administrations as well as professional experts.

Helsinki is the World Design Capital 2012. The Kruunuvuorenranta invitational lighting competition is part of the Kruunuvuorenranta light art project within the framework of the WDC2012 program.

The results of the Kruunuvuorenranta lighting competition will be revealed in conjunction with the first accomplished work of art in Kruunuvuorenranta - the Silo, as part of WDC2012 events.
