LUCI cities turn off their lights 60 minutes for Earth Hour on the 27th of March
Answering the call from Liege (Belgium), Geneva (Switzerland), Ghent (Belgium), Goteborg (Sweden), Glasgow (UK), Moscow (Russia), Bruxelles (Belgium), Marseille (France), Leipzig (Germany), Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and many other cities turn off their lights.
For the City of Leipzig, leading the work on LUCI’s “Charter of sustainable lighting”, Earth hour is the opportunity for cities around the world to set the example.
For the Mayor Burkhard Jung “The efforts for the respect of the environment have to be increased. Our message is clear: for the “green city” of Leipzig, the climate conference of Copenhagen has not brought enough results ».
Throughout the world thousands of cities are participating in the initiative and joining this symbolic movement in supprt of sustainbility: within the LUCI network, some cities such as Ghent will shut down all monument lighting, while others will focus on a few symbolic monuments of their city centre: the City Chambers in Glasgow, the State University in Moscow, the Hotel de Ville in Marseille or the RTBF/VRT in the Bruxelles agglomeration are some examples.
About Earth hour :
Launched by WWF, Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney (Australia) when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. A year later, Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and Rome’s Colosseum had their lighting temporarily turned off, as symbols of mobilization for sustainability.
