12th edition of Torino’s “Luci d’Artista” : the art that illuminates the city (until January 10th)
Luci d’Artista, presents the interaction between art and urban landscape through the use of light, with new works by Marco Gastini and Enrica Borghi
The exhibit – created by the Città di Torino and Fondazione CRT with the sponsorship of Regione Piemonte, Compagnia di San Paolo, Gruppo Iride, Torino Chamber of Commerce and the Ferrovie dello Stato - is one of the principal engagements included in Contemporary Art Torino Piemonte, the calendar that distinguishes the Fall season of contemporary arts with the programming of events pertaining to visual arts, music, theatre, cinema and performing arts.
From November 3, 2009 – January 10, 2010 a real-life dream will take shape in Torino, located halfway between urban design and contemporary art: fifteen installations of the highest quality and visual impact, created by fifteen artists of international fame, are placed in different points of the city. For the occasion they will bring to life an authentic “open air” exhibit and an original and evocative progression of lights. Winter in Torino will be animated by this evocative atmosphere, an exciting voyage for residents and tourists alike, through a series of exceptional “sets” that will place Torino among Europe’s ideal destinations for the winter season.
From the dreamy blue that spreads from the hills overlooking the city on a foggy night, thanks to Rebecca Horn’s installation Piccoli spiriti blu, to the magic, elegant lamps of the monumental Piazza San Carlo, the city’s salon, cloaked with neons by Nicola De Maria with his Regno dei Fiori: nido cosmico di tutte le anime.
Furthermore, this year’s Luci d’Artista exhibit includes the exposition of two new works: the first one is called L’energia che unisce si espande nel blu, by Marco Gastini and the second, arriving from the city of Salerno, created by Enrica Borghi called Mosaico.
The work by Marco Gastini is characterised by an aerial view of illuminated signals resembling a grandiose starry sky of which Energy is a determining factor.
Enrica Borghi’s work has its origins in Salerno, a splendid Mediterranean city with the presence of a cathedral that features ancient mosaics inside. Mosaico recalls the intensely coloured lights of the Mediterranean and the inlays on the rugs are an evocation to the memory, exchange of goods, fragrances and sounds of the people; but also of a checkerboard, the game of dominoes, the point-like signs of the 1960’s and Giò Ponti’s textures.
Other featured works are by: Mario Airò, Daniel Buren, Francesco Casorati, Joseph Kosuth, Mario Merz, Domenico Luca Pannoli, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Qingyun Ma, Luigi Stoisa, and Gilberto Zorio.
This is an authentic exhibit through the centre of the city that allows the visitor to not only admire works by the artists, but to be immersed in Torino’s aristocratic atmosphere – to breathe it in and experience it fully - among historic cafés and elegant boutiques, admiring its splendid Baroque-style buildings that make up the architectural sum of that which was Italy’s first capital.
