UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen inspires LYSLYD (Lightsound) to create "expanded space" lighting project
German artist and architect group Mader Stublic Wiermann transform DONG Energy’s power station, Avedøreværket into a 145 metres tall screen showing spectacular light and video installations. The project is called expanded space and the projections will not only throw light on the power station, but will also create an extraordinary image of the energy of the future.
In Hvidovre, just south of Copenhagen, you will find Denmark’s largest industrial area, Avedøre Holme, also home to Dong Energy’s Avedøreværket. Mader Stublic Wiermann will challenge the power station’s distinctive architectural profile by presenting the area through light and video projections on the facade of the power station.
The fiction created by the projections is united with reality, when they move in time with the movement of the wind. Not only the force of the wind but also the urban space is drawn in when customized vans drive around the area equipped with mobile projectors.
Travellers to and from Copenhagen will be met with a sensational sight when the 145 metre tall projections light up the dark hours. The projections will be visible from the air if flying in and out of Kastrup Airport; from Sjællandsbroen and Kalvebodbroen if travelling by car on the way to or from work; from the S-Train stations Avedøre and Friheden and in and around the Hvidovre area.
One of the artists behind expanded space, Alexander Stublic says: "Our work is always site specific, so we therefore decided to concentrate on Avedøre Holme’s dominant characteristics, which are energy production and transportation. expanded space creates a new visible layer using the power station and the customized vans , which will drive around distributing the layer into the area. Another point of interaction is how wind movement influences the installation. The installation adds a virtual layer to the city space, which in turn influences the actual circumstances on site.”
“We are proud that Mader Stublic Wiermann chose Avedøreværket as the background for the projected artwork. It helps to highlight the Danish strongholds on energy and climate issues, both from the air, from the sea and on land. Highly efficient and flexible power plants, together with wind power and the latest technologies, help us move into a future of cleaner energy without CO2,” says Anders Eldred, CEO of DONG Energy.
