Leipzig light festival celebrates 20 years of the ‘Peaceful Revolution’ as LUCI cities reflect on their “Charter for Sustainable Lighting
On the 9th October 2009, the Leipzig (Germany) light festival will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ‘Peaceful Revolution’.
On this day twenty years ago, tens of thousands of people marched peacefully on the streets of Leipzig, a candle in the hand, to demand more freedom in what was still the German Democratic Republic. The event remains an important stage in the process which led, one month later, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The festival will include twenty one selected projects which all have a relationship with light as a means of communication and there will also be a permanent installation produced by students of Leipzig HTWK.
‘Our objective is to provide the public with the means to participate more closely in this celebration of the ‘Peaceful Revolution’, comments Jürgen Meier, Artistic Director of the festival.
On the 10th October, following the festival, the City of Leipzig is organising a conference on ‘Sustainable Public Lighting Strategies’, with the support of LUCI. The conference will mark the launch of the city’s sustainable lighting masterplan.
Through the presentation of case studies from the cities of Leipzig (Germany), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Bochum (Germany), Ghent (Belgium) and Lyon (France), the conference will contribute to the elaboration of a LUCI Sustainable Lighting Charter.
All cities from the LUCI network are invited to send their contributions to the sustainable lighting charter to LUCI at luci@luciassociation.org before 9th October. A first draft of this document will be presented and discussed during the LUCI AGM in Gwangju (Korea).
You can download the ‘Sustainable Public Lighting Strategies’ programme and register for the conference via the LUCI website homepage.
