Enter projects now for the first edition of the sustainable lighting award, ‘Auroralia’

‘Auroralia’, launched by Schréder with the support of LUCI, will reward the three best exterior lighting installations which minimise their negative imprint, or better still, increase their positive imprint on the environment, in the most assertive, exemplary and original way.

Candidates must be cities or local authorities and entries must consist of a nocturnal lighting project in an urban environment. The prizes (first prize - € 6000, second prize - € 3000, third prize - € 1500) will be awarded during Lyon’s ‘Fête des Lumières’, December 2009.

Initially adopted to create visibility and security in cities at night time, lighting has today become a key element in urban development. Improving the quality of life for inhabitants, affirming a night time identity, creating an atmosphere for those that live there; lighting has become an integral part of city life. This now indispensable function, however, can only be justified if it minimises the corresponding environmental impact: energy consumption, CO² emissions, use of energy resources etc.

Since the development of its first commercial products, Schréder has been involved in researching ways to ensure sufficient lighting in cities at the same time as minimising energy consumption. ‘Auroralia’ is one of the key poles of this research.

As for LUCI, as an international network of cities of light engaged in using light as a major tool of sustainable urban development, ‘Auroralia’ is another opportunity to contribute to the promotion of sustainable and intelligent lighting practices in cities throughout the world.
