DESIGN LIGHTS UP THE CITY
Milan calls the creative excellences in order to furnish and adorn with light the metropolis: young talents and great designers will transform the city in an open air stage of installations and works of contemporary art and design.
Milan lightens itself of design: a great competition among the young talents of the most important Schools and Academies of the metropolis and a special invitation to the most important designers of the contemporary scene, will transform the city in a laboratory of ideas and experimentation in order to give life to an open air stage of light’s installations, projections and stages of design and contemporary art.
LED - Light Exhibition Design – is promoted by the Council of Milan, Assessorato Arredo, Decoro Urbano e Verde under the sponsorship of ADI – Associazione per il Disegno Industriale, AIDI – Associazione Italiana di Illuminazione, AIAP – Associazione Italiana Progettazione per la Comunicazione Visiva, in collaboration with the Media Partner ABITARE, Luce&Design, LUCE.
An ambitious project that gathers all the most important formative and academic institutes of the city, both private and publics. From the Faculty of Design of the Polytechnic of Milan, to the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera; from the Domus Academy to the IED - European Institute of Design; from the Naba - New Academy of Fine Arts of Milan, to the SPD - the historical Polytechnic School of Design. On stage the young talents and to their side the great masters.
“A new appointment that involves all the representative subjects of the design’s world - declares Maurizio Cadeo, City Council Member of the Assessorato Arredo, Decoro Urbano e Verde of Milan – in an exemplary city able to ‘create a system’: from the young talents to the most famous Italian and foreigners designers; from the world of the education to the economic and productive one. A project able to promote an image of Milan in the world, not only in terms of visibility, but also in terms of identity, international character and culture”.
In occasion of December 2009, LED wants to give light to the variety of the expressive languages, watching on one side to the creative excellences of our metropolis and from the other side to a communitarian occasion in order to make Milan a pole able to attract more foreigners visitors. `A city of light' made of objects of design furniture that will lead the citizens and the visitors to the discovery of a new vision of the city places, from the centre to the suburbs, besides the traditional Christmas lights.
`A city to adorn' where the use of the light becomes an occasion of art and design, like the great examples of European models: from the city of Lione, with “La Fête des Lumières” that attracts every year millions of visitors, to the great light cities like London, Paris and Frankfurt, and not last Turin, with “Lights of artist” and Palermo with the project “Lights of author”, realized by Davide Rampello who involved the most important Italian designers, in a scenographical `revisiting' of the traditional city lights.
LED is a project that will be developed in more phases, opening with a great competition. Students and former students, professional people, Italians and foreigners, are called to be compared and to project works of light in order to furnish the city and illuminate squares, avenues, historical parks, monuments and buildings, from the city centre to the suburbs.
A skilful work of experimentation and research that, during the next month of April, will see the exhibition of the best projects in a great show. The finalists will be rewarded in that occasion from a prestigious jury. The City Council of Milan has invited Davide Rampello - President of Triennale Milan, Stefano Boeri – Director of ABITARE, Luisa Bocchietto - President ADI, Louis Clair – a French famous lighting designer, Piero Castiglioni - a famous Italian lighting architect, and they will win the realization of their own work in order to `adorn' with light and creativity the city in the month of December 2009.
Out of competition, a special invitation has be addressed to the great masters of the design, ten excellent names both Italians and foreigners: Michele De Lucchi (I), Mario Nanni (I), Fabio Novembre (I), Italo Rota (I), Paolo Rizzatto (I), Paul Cocksedge (UK), Akary-Lisa Ishii (JAP), Carole Ferreri (F), Alain Guilhot (F), Gilbert Moity (F), Patricia Urquiola (S). Their projects will illuminate Milan for the next Christmas period alongside the works of the young talents.
Milan, already Capital of the design, becomes with Led an international display window, a place of innovation able to offer a stimulating ‘cultural experience’ for the exchange and the comparison of knowledge. An appointment that involves the entire creative and productive system of the metropolis, increasing from the first edition the expositive circuit from the public places to the art galleries, the ateliers and the shows-room, in a logic of a widespread event that can involve the city to 360 degrees.
