The City of Eindhoven is designated President of the « Sustainable Development » Commission by the LUCI Executive Committee
Historical member of the LUCI network and very well-known for its strong link to lighting activities, the City of Eindhoven will lead the work of the LUCI network on the theme of sustainable development.
As President of the Commission and with the support of all the LUCI cities and associated members interested, it will engage itself on specific projects that further contribute to increase knowledge on sustainable lighting and to develop exchanges within the LUCI network on this topic.
The first focus the Sustainabe development Commission will be to share and communicate progress on the recently accepted Interreg IVb European Program callled BLISS (Better Lighting in Sustainable Streets).
This program involves 4 partner cities among which Eindhoven (NL), St Helens Metropolitan Borough Council (UK), Interleuven (BE), Kaiserslautern (DE) as well as 4 observers among which LUCI, the Institution of Lighing Engineers, the University of Manchester and Philips Lighting).
The aim of the project is to reduce the amount of power consumed by street lighting through the use of new technologies, in such a way as to achieve significant reductions in energy cost and carbon dioxide emissions.
The project that will be carried in the 4 cities mentionned above, aims at testing new approaches to the provision of street lighting in a wide range of locations including different residential, commercial and retail environments, street architecture and demographics. It will enable best practice in each of the partner countries to be tested and evaluated in a variety of situations.
In Eindhoven, the BLISS program will take place the Strip-S area, an inner city area where Eindhoven is developing the project "Creating a Public Lighting Experience" with Philips Design. More information on the Strip-S plan and inspiration on www.strip-s.nl/english/
